- shake mud out of rubber boots. make room for new mud.
- follow little brother into unknown woods.
- decide you don’t want to get dirty.
- get dirty anyway.
- scrape thighs on thorns.
- get whacked in face by rain-wet shrub.
- creep low through thickets.
- remember being small and not having to duck.
- find reservoir hill. gaze awhile.
- tramp your way home.
- pull off sweaty boots. leave in garage.
- rinse mud off legs and feet in bathtub.
- count two new scrapes, three new bruises.
- comb sticks and sprigs from tangled hair.
- soothe knees and shins with aloe vera.
- watch the rain start again.
